I think you can clearly see that with all popular franchises. I mean just take a look at Maya the Bee. I grew up with the traditonal animation and nowadays everything is CGI. I know it‘s not the same as a big online game and a mobile game but back then, passion was the main focus, nowadays it‘s just milking the franchise and getting every cent out of it. I mean, sure. If you‘re a developer for a franchise, this is your job. You earn money though that and so on. But it was the same case back then and it wasn‘t just money but having a vision and transfer that to the audience. Btw. don‘t get me wrong CGI isn‘t the main reason why I think franchises go downhill. Also because it takes much less time. I get that. But it‘s often cheap CGI with not much shading, the pacing is very fast, the colors are too bright and colorful, the stories are lame. That‘s the connection my brain is often doing: Trad. Animation to CGI Not good.
I still prefer original animation. There sure are good CGI series and stuff but I can‘t think of any.
Btw. unpopular opinion here (maybe) but I feel the exactly same about the Winxclub Reboot I don‘t know how popular the last seasons were (and the Live Action) since I stopped watching Winxclub after season 4. But I kind of have a feeling the reboot might flop. The animation is top and the transformation but I fear the characters will lack personality or development. Just my prediction here.
It‘s nice to hear that you always have exciting stories to tell. What an honor to be able to talk with the original creators from WA It‘s so nice to hear that they were also very passionate about the developing! I really noticed that back then playing WA.
How many languages were it in the end? I think back then everything took much space and people didn‘t know how to save space from developed games 🤔
I agree with a lot of what you’re saying, especially about the shift in focus with many franchises. But I don’t necessarily think the fault lies with the transition to CGI. A show can be fully CGI and still be absolutely amazing if the effort is put into the writing and world-building. On the flip side, a 2D-animated series can still end up being lackluster if the heart of the story isn’t there. But I do think a lot of franchises are giving up on their animation style, just like Miraculous and even Noddy for example, when they were a part of why it was so loved. People don't generally like change, let alone such a visual and impacful one.
Regarding the Winx Club reboot, I actually have hopes for it, especially because it seems like they’re leaning heavily on the nostalgia of the older fanbase in their marketing this time and they keep promising a lot of things, for one Nabu is coming back and Roxy is rumored to appear, alongside a few things that really do look like it has potential to work. That gives me a little optimism.
But like you, I really hope they focus on character development and give the Winx more depth. In Season 1 of the original series, the Winx were the plot—their personal growth, their choices, and relationships drove the story forward instead of just being carried by the plot itself. That’s such a key element, and it’s what made the early seasons so memorable. If they can capture that again, I think the reboot has a chance to shine.
